Calligraphy Rhapsody - Retrospective Exhibition of Georges Mathieu: Curated by Ms Catherine Kwai; Organised by K11 Foundation

19 May - 4 Jul 2021

Co-presented by K11 Art Foundation and the Consulate General of France in Hong Kong & Macau, Calligraphy Rhapsody - Retrospective Exhibition of Georges Mathieu showcases 14 major paintings spanning 40 years, including Mathieu's early practices from the 1950s where he emphasised calligraphic gesture, the monumental canvases that Mathieu created for the Grand Palais Retrospective in 1978, as well as paintings from the "cosmic shift" period starting from 1984 showing his potent intrinsic energy. Celebrating the centenary of Georges Mathieu in 2021, the exhibition strives to reveal the fierce expression and the forefront vision of this pioneer of free abstraction. The exhibition is curated by Catherine Kwai.

"After curating Rue Du Moulin Vert in 2018, I believed Mathieu deserve to have a higher recognition. A painter, a philosopher, and pivotal instigator of Lyrical Abstraction, Georges Mathieu evoked the Art Informel movement in post-war Paris. Mathieu curated exhibitions and cultivated a connection between abstract artists in Paris and New York. He inspired performance art, compressing energy into the unleashed creative act. He synthesised the spirit of Asian calligraphy with the abstract language, inspiring philosophical debate. It is impossible to classify Georges Mathieu's impact with a single label."  - Catherine Kwai, Curator
