Colours Forgotten is the second solo exhibition of French-Korean artist Myonghi in Hong Kong in October. Among the 40 oil and pastel works are the gigantic oil painting inspired by Patagonia in Chile, “The Medici Fountain” series of Paris and series of the Jeju Island in Korea. The most special one is the “Hong Kong” series produced in a hotel by the mountain in Pokfulam in Hong Kong, demonstrating the rare natural scenery in the city abstractly.
Myonghi has been wandering around in the natural sceneries, recording the reality in the world through painting. From Jeju, Paris, Touraine, Patagonia to Pokfulam in Hong Kong; the immense wonder of the natural beauty has always been inspiring her. Immersed in the minute changes of the world, she recalls the spirituality underneath the superficial and deconstructs the world in a sincere yet sensitive manner. The circulating sun and moon, the dancing dusts of chaos, the sound of cracking glacier, the first ray of light in a winter morning, the smell of grass in the garden after the rain; the rhythm of the fountain, the subtleness of the peony… the world from the perspective of Myonghi is pure and delicate. Under her brushes, the ever-changing details and the finest inspirations are clotted on the canvass in the form of orchestrating lines of colour.
The respect of nature, the freedom of finding the truth and the ecstasy of creation are among the energies colliding on her canvas, forming a “forgotten colour” – the colour of nature. In this digitalized world, we are surrounded by virtual images. People engaged in the world of their phones as if it is their reality; the ever-changing colours of nature have long been forgotten. Myonghi’s paintings invite the audience to re-imagine nature, restoring the beauty of it. Her works are above figurative and abstract; like the Chinese literal philosophies, it is a pursuit of the connection and resemblance between human and nature.
