WULF WINCKELMANN (Born 1967, Germany) |

Wulf Winckelmann's canvases are intense studies of built up textures, hidden forms and lucent colours. They possess a suggestive nature, hinting at landscapes, mountainscapes and seascapes.
Winckelmann draws much inspiration from the canal veined city of Venice - a fact that accounts for the watery, eerily lit heaviness of his paintings. Echoes of colour above and below the characteristic horizontal line insinuates wavering reflections of light and colour. In the process of building up layers on the canvas Winckelmann leaves evidence of lines and shapes formed by previously applied surfaces. The visible remainders of these hidden elements and stages, accented by lustrous hues, add a ghostly dimension and depth to the paintings.
Winckelmannn eschews the use of definite objects to create a sense of substantiality. He instead uses colour at its expressive best by etching, blocking and scraping it into and across the surface; applying it so as to generate a sense of mass and gravity. Winckelmann allows his audience to delve into the unfathomable depth of his canvases, triggering their imagination to beget its own lush landscapes.
