Mao Xuhui was born in Chongqing, Sichuan, China. He graduated from the Oil Painting Department of the Yunnan Academy of Fine Arts in 1982 and began teaching there in 1996. He currently lives and works in Kunming, Yunnan Province, China.

Mao Xuhui has exhibited widely in Asia and Europe. His work has been shown in Shanghai, Beijing, Hong Kong, Singapore, New York, San Francisco, Barcelona, Bonn, Paris and London. Mao’s paintings have been included in several influential shows including the touring exhibition “Inside Out: New Chinese Art” which was installed in such prestigious museums as P.S 1 Contemporary Art Center (New York City), the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, Tacoma Art Museum and Henry Art gallery (Seattle), the National Gallery of Art (Canberra, Australia) and the Hong Kong Museum of Art in 2000. In 2005, His 20 year’s Retrospective Exhibition was hold in Xin Dong Cheng Gallery, Beijing.
