FANG SHAO HUA (Born 1962, China)
Fang Shao Hua's paintings convey a sense of nostalgic sentimentality through their muted and limited colour scheme as well as through the repeated use of an umbrella and traditional Chinese architectural pillars and arches as symbols. The audience is drawn into Fang's modern cityscapes through these strong, bold red structures as though exiting an older, more sacred era and entering a period of slick modernity. One gets the sense of the shakiness of this contemporary epoch through the expressively loose brushstrokes Fang uses to construct the modern scenes. This contrasts the solidly painted and delineated presence of the red pillared forms. The symbol of the umbrella, hovering above the metropolitan skyline, and the gray tone of the painted city makes clear the artist's critical feelings toward the ostensible merits of the new order. Through his combination of old and new images, Fang has presented a sort of artistically sentimental ethnography of Chinese society, unflinchingly yet sensitively analyzing this culture for what it has become and for what it is.
